Tax Relief for Donations to Approved Sports Bodies

A summary of the tax relief for donors/sports bodies on donations of say €500 is set out below. The arrangement for allowing tax relief on donations will depend on whether the donor is a PAYE Taxpayer or an Individual on Self Assessment.

PAYE Taxpayer

The relief is given on a ‘grossed up ‘ basis to the approved sports body. In other words, the donation is treated as having been received nett of income tax. For individuals who pay tax at 40% or 20% the calculation is as follows:

40% Taxpayer 20% Taxpayer
Grossed Up Contribution 833.33 625.00
Tax (333.33) (125.00)
Net Contribution/Donation 500.00 500.00

In each of the above examples the Club would claim either €333.33 or €125.00 from the Revenue Commissioners, giving rise to amounts receivable by the Club of €833.33 or €625.00. The cost to the donor is each case would be €500.

The individual must complete an Appropriate Certificate and forward it to the Club. The Club will supply this Certificate.

Individual on Self Assessment

The donation can be included in an individual’s tax return. Tax relief is granted to the individual and is calculated as follows:

40% Taxpayer 20% Taxpayer
Donation 833.33 625.00
Tax Relief (333.33) (125.00)
Net Cost 500.00 500.00

The Appropriate Receipt will be issued by the Club.

Arrangements have also been made with local Credit Unions for those who wish to spread their donation.

Please contact Val McDermott, Hon Treasurer, Old Crescent RFC at 087 2969656 for further information on how to contribute and if you have any queries.
