To mark the 30th anniversary of the All Ireland League, IrishRugby and AIL sponsors Energia have asked rugby followers to submit their AIL stories and memories, see https://www.irishrugby.ie/…/energia-to-celebrate…/
Old Crescent RFC joined the All Ireland League in its 2nd season after winning a 4 province round robin qualifier. The Club has played in the AIL ever since.
Old Crescent RFC members will have many good memories of our time in the AIL but without doubt a highlight will be the 1995-96 season when we went through the season undefeated to gain promotion to the 1st Division of the AIL. Under Club President Bill Hanly and kiwi Club Coach Larry Green, we secured victories over Terenure, Dolphin, Wanderers, Bective, Dungannon, Malone, Clontarf, NIFC, Sundays’ Well, and drew with Greystones.
In the ten games played, Old Crescent used a total of 27 players. Player appearances were as follows:
10 games: Leo Doyle, Stephen Touhy, and our current Club Covid 19 Officer, Sean Madigan.
9 games: Brian Begley, Mark Hayes, Eoin O’Sullivan, David Bowles, Paul McDonagh.
8 games: PJ McLoughlin, Brian Toland, Liam Toland.
7 games: Anthony O’Dwyer, Diarmuid O’Malley, Robert Duggan.
4 games: Simon Cooney, Diarmuid Reddan, Fergal Downes.
3 games: Dara Kirby, John Forde.
2 games: Shane McCarthy, Pierce Hallissey, Gary Arden.
1 game: Philip Madigan, John Noonan, Mike O’Mara, Tadgh O’Malley, Bevan Cantrell.
In the ten League games, Old Crescent scored 246 points, made up of 23 tries, 16 conversions, 26 penalties, and 7 drop goals. Brian Begley was out top scorer with 97 points, and Sean Madigan was our top try scorer with 7 tries.
Our picture shows Club Captain Diarmuid Reddan accepting the AIL Division 2 Trophy after our win over Sundays Well in the final AIL game of the season in Musgrave Park in April 1996.
Definitely, a memorable AIL season!
