Our senior team concluded their UBL 2014-15 campaign with a home game against new visitors to Rosbrien, Navan RFC, last Saturday before a good crowd of home supporters. Crescent started on the right note with a try after ten minutes scored by man of the match Anthony Barry and converted by Shane O’Brien.
Navan replied with an unconverted try shortly afterwards and went in front for the first time with a converted penalty five minutes before half time. However, Crescent continued to attack and their efforts were rewarded just before half time when Kevin Meade burst through for a try out wide. The convert was missed leaving Crescent in front at half time by 12 points to eight.
Five minutes into the second half, Navan went in front again with an unconverted try, and the visitors went further ahead with a converted penalty midway through the second half. This prompted a strong response from the home side and we went back in front with an unconverted try scored out wide by our winger Conor Hegarty.
Crescent followed this up with a bonus point fourth try scored by Sean Monaghan to put us 22 points to 16 ahead with ten minutes remaining. However, our visitors were not done and they scored an unconverted try to narrow our lead to just one point with five minutes remaining. We needed to finish the game in the Navan half but unfortunately the last few minutes were spent defending our own line. In the last play of the game,.the Navan outhalf kicked a perfect dropped goal to disappoint the home crowd and give the visitors the win by 24 points to 22.
Crescent were left with the consulation of scoring four tries and collecting two bonus points to finish in tenth place in Division 2B. We won six games and lost nine. It won’t be any easier in UBL Division 2C next year and we will have to improve on this year’s performance if we are to be competitive next season.
