Old Crescent RFC

Club Notes, 24 March 2015

Our Munster Junior Cup side took on Abbeyfeale RFC in the Munster Junior Plate competition on a bright sunny afternoon in Rosbrien last Sunday.  Crescent opened the scoring after five minutes with an excellent try scored out wide by Conor Hegarty. Abbeyfeal replied with a converted penalty kick a few minutes later and followed it up with a converted try to go ahead shortly afterwards.

Crescent went back in front on the half hour with a well worked try scored by Stephen Hackett, the successful convert was added by Conor Hegarty.  However, some loose Crescent defence in the last ten minutes of the first half allowed Abbeyfeale in for two converted tries, and they added a penalty convert in injury time to give the visitors the lead at half time by 27 points to 12.

Crescent started strongly in the second half and earned two penalty attempts which Conor Hegarty converted to narrow the gap to seven points. Ten minutes into the second half, Rory Cunningham charged over the Abbeyfeale line for a superb try to narrow the gap to just two points.  The conversion attempt which would have levelled the scores was just wide.

Crescent were now right back in the game, but it was the visitors who scored next with two successful penalty attempts.  They stretched their lead again with another successful penalty attempt on the hour mark.  Abbeyfeale wrapped up their win with another converted try late in the game to leave the final score Old Crescent 25 Abbeyfeale 43.

Our Junior Cup side played with great heart and no lack of effort, and would have given a better of account of themselves with more game time together

Next weekend, our First team resume what had been a very disjointed UBL season with their final away fixture against Boyne RFC in Drogheda at 2.30pm next Saturday.
